A New Year's baby is seeking re-election as Ottawa County's probate and juvenile judge.  Merrill B. Rudes, who has filled that post since February 1973, was born in Genoa, Jan. 1, 1920, the son of Merrill B. and Della Meyer Rudes.  His mother was a native of Clay Center.

Married to the former Mary Carey Leutz, an Oak Harbor school teacher, Judge Rudes is father of four children.  He and Mrs. Rudes live on South River Road, Oak Harbor, with their pet cat "Nicki".

Rudes' family has lived in Ottawa County many years.  His grandfather owned and operated a grocery store in Clay Center and his father operated the Ford agency in Genoa for many years.

After graduation from Genoa High School, Judge Rudes attended Ohio State University and won his doctor of jurisprudence degree at the University of Toledo Law School in 1955, the same year he was admitted to the Ohio State Bar.

Before that, Merrill B Rudes owned and operated the Rudes Grocery Story [sic] in Clay Center for 10 years, was co-manager with his brother George of the Nick Stevens Motor Sales in Genoa, and was editor of the Woodville News for a year.

For six years after becoming a lawyer, he was a partner in the law firm of Rosentreter and Rudes in Oak Harbor.  Judge Rudes first bore that title after he was elected judge of Port Clinton Municipal Couty and served in that capacity from November 1961 to February 1973.

Elected judge of the Ottawa County probate and juvenile court, he has been on that bench since February 1973.  He has received six Ohio Supreme Court awards for superior judicial service during those years and served several years on the executive committee of the Ohio Municipal Judge's

Rudes served four years in the 90th Infantry Division during World War II, and rose from private to captain.  He served 20 months in the European theater, from the Normandy invasion to Czecho-Slovakia.  He was recalled from 10 months during the Korean conflict, and served as a troop commander at Camp Atterbury, Ind.

A Lieutenant, a Private & Me

This picture is labeled as "Lt. Rise, Pfc. Mardel, Me". I believe the me to be Merrill Rudes. Does anybody know any more information on Lt Rise or Pfc Mardel?

Timeframe: I am guessing pretty much anytime after February 25, 1942, his enlistment date. Especially since this doesn't give a location so I can't narrow it down by that.

Where It Fits: Merrill Rudes is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. He is the father of Diane, De Ila, Terrence & Merrill.

Todays birthdays are Mary Davis-Dutton, Henry Finken, Sarah Roberts and Edna Schmidt/Smith-Rullison.

The Whole Rudes Gang

In the most recent batch of photographs I scanned there were a couple group pictures. Boy was I pleased to find these as I was rummaging through things. This is from the water damaged box so I apologize for the shabby copy and if anybody has a better copy or a way of fixing this one I would be much obliged. From what I can make out I believe this to be Della Meyer-Rudes in the back row on the far right side. I believe she has her arm around Diane Rudes. The next row is Merrill in the back, Mary Cary Leutz-Rudes and then Merrill the younger. Terrence is between Merrill & Randy. Behind Randy is his mother, Marian Bringe. Behind Marian is George. Marian appears to be holding on to Connie & De Ila who are the two girls standing on the pillars by the stairs.

Timeframe: I think De Ila and Connie look to be about the same size in this picture as they do in yesterdays so I am guessing it was taken in the 1960's, pre-1963. Correction: There is a date on the bottom of the image that says Sep. 59 so I guess that makes it closer to 1959 than yesterday's 1961. :-) Thanks for pointing that out De Ila.

Where It Fits: Randolph & Connie are the children of George Rudes & Marian Bringe. Diane, Merrill, Terrence & De Ila are the children of Merrill Rudes & Mary Cary Leutz. Merrill & George are the sons of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. Della is the daughter of George Harlow Meyer & Marguerite Schnackenberg.

Today's Birthdays are Elizabeth Johannsen, John Meyer, Malinda Disher-Rahm and Kathy Cash.

Happy Birthday Connie!

Today we have a picture that I can tell you A LOT about. In this picture is Merrill Rudes, his daughter (De Ila), his niece (Connie Rudes) and Walt Waggoner. This is at the swearing in of Merrill Rudes as the Municipal Court Judge of Ottawa County, Ohio.

Timeframe: According to the date on the back this was taken November 27, 1961. That makes Connie Rudes 6.5 and De Ila 9 years old.

Where It Fits: Connie is the daughter of George Rudes. De Ila is the daughter of Merrill Rudes. Merrill & George were the sons of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer.

Today's Birthdays: Herman Ohlinger, Floyd Stoner, Lillian Ohlinger-Nielsen, Angeline Thompson-Caldwell & Connie Rudes. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CONNIE!

Matches

This post was delivered to my doorstep yesterday, literally. Jeff Streng was at his step-daughters apartment/house where they had just torn out a wall. It seems inside the wall was a collection of matchbooks and he scarfed this one up and brought it to us. THANK YOU JEFF!

Timeframe: Good question. If you look at the back of the matchbook it was printed after World War II.
Where It Fits: Merrill is the father of Diane, Merrill, Terrence & De Ila. He is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. He is the grandson of Carlos Rudes & Lillie Hatch and George Meyer & Marguerite Schnackenberg.

Today In History: Today Rachel Laing turns 16! HAPPY BIRTHDAY RACHEL!

Merrill Rudes

This is Merrill Rudes. I am assuming this is his senior picture but that is simply because of the pose and his age.

Timeframe: If this is a senior picture he graduated from Genoa High School about 1938 or 1939.

Where It Fits: Merrill is the father of Diane, Merrill, Terrence & De Ila. He is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. He is the grandson of Carlos Rudes & Lilly Hatch and George Meyer & Marguerite Schnackenberg.

Today In History: Today Friederika Richardson-Hopfinger would be 183.

Mom & Her Boys

This is one of the pictures from the basement and is in very pitiful shape. If anybody has any ideas on how I could repair some of the damage I would be very grateful. As far as I can make out you have George Rudes, Della Meyer Rudes & Merrill Rudes.

Timeframe: Since Merrill is in uniform that would make it during World War II or later.

Where It Fits: Della is the daughter of George H. Meyer & Marguerite Schnackenberg. Della married Merrill Rudes and is the mother of both George & Merrill. Merrill married Mary Cary Leutz and they had Diane, Merrill, Terry and De Ila. George married Marion Bringe and they had Randolph, Jacquelyn, Connie & Amy.

**UPDATE**Military Men

UPDATE: Ernie Isaac was kind enough to look at this picture for me and identify the man in the second row, fourth from the right as his father, Ernie Isaac. He also confirmed the identity of Curt Brough & Merrill Rudes. Thank you Ernie!

This is another picture I took when dad and I went to visit Uncle Bob. According to Uncle Bob this is the C. Company, 467th Chemical Mortar Battalion. Uncle Bob started rattling off names so fast this whippersnapper could barely keep up and I had to ask him to repeat a name or two. Please pardon any misspellings but starting on the left, front row we have Allen Dykeman, Joe Cleary, Raleigh Qualman, Paul Lockwood, Merrill B. Rudes, Carl Alamo, Robert Leutz, Bill Richie and Kurt Brough. In the second row, fourth from the left stands Roy Cooley. Do any of the other faces look familiar?

Timeframe: World War II

How It Fits: Merrill B. Rudes is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. Robert Leutz is the son of Leon Leutz & Merle Rose Fritsche.

Judge Rudes and Judge Wargowsky

The judges. On the left is Judge Donald S. Wargowsky. On the right is Judge Merrill B. Rudes.

Timeframe: Depends on which swearing in this is. Judge Rudes was elected to the municipal court in 1961. He was elected probate & juvenile judge in 1972. I am thinking it is closer to the 1961 election.

Where It Fits: Judge Merrill Rudes is the father of Diane, Merrill, Terrence & De Ila. Merrill is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer.

The Family Couch

This is a picture of Merrill Rudes his wife, Mary Caroline Leutz. Three of their four children are included. Left to right you have Terrence, sitting on Merrill's lap, Diane, Mary Cary & Merrill.

Timeframe: Judging by the lack of De Ila I am assuming this picture was taken before Fall, 1952. I am guessing sometime in 1951 because Terrence looks to be about three.

Where It Fits: Diane, Merrill, Terrence & De Ila are the children of Merrill Rudes & Mary Caroline Leutz. Merrill is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. Mary Cary is the daughter of Leon Leutz & Merle Fritsche.

Happy Birthday Grandpa

Today we will have two posts but it was just too good to pass up. Today would have been the 90th birthday of Merrill "Junior" Rudes. Happy New Year & Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Timeframe: Mary Cary is wearing a ring on her left hand so this was taken after 1941. I am guessing it was late 1940's or early 1950's. My guess is between the birth of Terry & De Ila due to extra evidence in another photo.

Where It Fits: Merrill & Mary Cary are the parents of Diane, Merrill, Terry & De Ila. Merrill is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. Mary Cary is the daughter of Leon Leutz & Merle Fritsche.

The Night Before Christmas

Above is the title page to a book found at Grandma's house. It has one of my favorite poems "Visit of St. Nicholas". Also found in this thin board book is "The Christmas Grab-Bag", "Annie's and Willie's Prayer", "A Little Boy's Letter to Santa Claus", "Tot and the Turkey Gobbler", "Mildred and the Turkey", "Old Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus's Letter".

Timeframe: "Junior from Santa. Dec. 25 - 1926" so Christmas, 1926. Junior would have been just shy of seven.

How It Fits: Merrill "Junior" Rudes is the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. Junior is the father of Terry, Merrill, De Ila & Diane.

1922 Genoa Baseball Team

This came to me framed and moderately labeled. As you can see there are not names for all of the players but it does say the team is from 1922. Does anybody know any other players from the 1922 team?

Timeframe: 1922, baseball season. Somewhere between basketball season & football season. The four seasons are basketball, baseball, football and hockey right?

Where It Fits: Merrill Rudes is the son of Carlos and Lilly Rudes and the father of Merrill "Junior" & George Rudes. Merrill is the father of De Ila, Diane, Merrill & Terry.

**UPDATE** Rudes Babies

UPDATE: Laurie Dangler has confirmed the identity of the second baby. It is her grandfather, George Rudes, in his baptism gown. Thank you Laurie!

There were two babies on a double matting. The one on the left is printed on a post card. This was a very popular occurrence and I believe it would have been a very handy idea. The pictures are thicker and tend to hold up better and it also gives me "postage". Even if it wasn't mailed and/or didn't have a stamp on it you can use the "place stamp here" symbols to figure out about how old it is. Very handy for me.

On the back of this photograph/postcard it says "Junior Rudes, 4 ms old". The stamp on the back dates it between 1910 & 1930. If this is Merrill Rudes it would have been taken in April/May, 1920 so the stamp fits. (Although with that range it would be hard to miss.)

This brings us to baby #2. On the right hand side was another picture. There are no labels on this photograph but since it was literally attached to the first one I assume it is also a Rudes baby. Is it a picture of George or is it Merrill a couple months older?

Timeframe: The first picture would be in about May 1920. The second picture, if it is Merrill, would also be taken in the 1920's because he appears to be sitting independently and he is wearing shoes that do not appear to be scuffed from crawling and/or walking which would put him under a year. If the second picture is of George it would have been taken in 1924.

How It Fits: Merrill & George are the sons of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. They are the fathers of Diane, Merrill, Terry, De Ila, Randy, Jackie, Connie & Amy.

Sorry, I was planning to post this one on Tuesday but it completely slipped my mind until today. I figured better late then never so here goes. This picture was taken November 17, 1941. Mary Cary was just shy of 24 and Merrill was 21. Happy Anniversary!

Timeframe: November 1941.

How it Fits: Merrill was the son of Merrill Rudes & Della Meyer. Mary Caroline was the daughter of Leon Leutz & Merle Fritsche. Together they are the parents of Merrill, Terry, Diane & De Ila.

P.S. -- Today is Terry & Kym's anniversary but ssshhh, you didn't hear it from me. 26 years in case you are interested.
